Junior Master Gardener program
The purpose of the Junior Master Gardener program is to assist young people in acquiring a basic knowledge of gardening, leadership, and service necessary to make a positive contribution to their family, school, and community.
Each year, Greater Greenville Master Gardeners offer a two-week summer camp at Roper Mountain Science Center for students in third through fifth grade. Hands-on, group and individual learning experiences are provided by members of GGMG with assistance from the RMSC staff. Topics of study include soils and water; plant growth and development; landscape, ecological and environmental horticulture; garden insects and plant diseases; along with nutrition and uses of fruits, nuts, vegetables, and herbs. Sample activities include assisting in the Heritage Garden, studying pollinators and their life cycles in the butterfly garden, and using herbs and plants to create nutritional snacks and meals. Service activities, such as community beautification projects, provide an opportunity for the students to use what they have learned. Students who complete the requirements for the program are awarded certification as Junior Master Gardeners.
The JMG program in Greenville County is sponsored and supported by the Greenville Master Gardener Association in cooperation with Clemson University Extension Service. For more information concerning the JMG camp, look for Summer Camp information on the Roper Mountain website at:
