Community Gardens Working Group

The Greater Greenville Master Gardeners Association began our support for community gardens in the 1990’s with the development of Project Host Soup Kitchen Garden. While no longer maintaining a specific community garden, the GGMG in association with Clemson Extension has created a Community Garden Working Group Program that assigns Master Gardener Mentors to assist with local community gardens.

Community Gardens are defined as any piece of land gardened by a group of people. They can be community-based, school-based, faith-based, or individual plots and are typically flowers, vegetables, and fruits.

The concept of Community Gardening has flourished in the last few years with over 70 gardens in Greenville County. Gardening for Good is a local non-profit dedicated to networking Greenville-area community gardens.

Through educational workshops, including classes, workshops, and speakers, as well as gardening “mentors,” GGMG members support community gardens.
